Best Local Farms and Farmers Markets in Portland for Fresh Summer Produce

There’s a stretch every summer where my weekends start at a farmers market. I grab coffee, pick up a loaf of sourdough, maybe some peaches or herbs for dinner. It’s funny how buying one bunch of basil can spawn an entire Italian dinner. It’s one of my favorite things about summer here.

So if you’re looking for a good farmers market in Portland, or want to find a few local farms worth the drive, here are the ones I love to visit.

Hollywood Farmers Market

NE Hancock St between 44th and 45th Avenues, Portland

Saturdays 8 AM to 1 PM

I go here for the produce, honestly. The turnover is fast so everything is fresh. They have local farms set up every week and you can talk directly to the people growing your food. I usually grab greens, whatever stone fruit is in season, and bread from one of the bakery vendors.

I keep going back because the produce is cheaper than the grocery store and it lasts longer. Plus I can get everything I need in one trip without having to wander through a massive store.

Talarico’s Produce

2230 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland

Daily 9 AM to 6 PM

Talarico’s has produce at prices that make you wonder how grocery stores justify their markups. On their Instagram they were advertising Hami melons and yellow flesh watermelon at 99 cents a pound. I go in for seasonal stuff mostly… whatever’s actually in season tastes better and costs less.

I keep coming back because they’re open every single day and the prices don’t change. You can count on finding what you need without planning your week around market hours.

Alberta Cooperative Grocery

1500 NE Alberta St, Portland

Daily 9 AM to 10 PM

Alberta Co-op carries organic produce and a ton of bulk items. I grab nuts, grains, and spices from the bulk section because I can get exactly how much I need. They also stock local brands… on their Instagram they mentioned Cafe Mam organic coffee and Plants Simply Co condiments.

I go back because the bulk section saves me money and I don’t end up with half-empty jars taking up space. Plus they’re open till 10 PM every day so I can stop by after work.

Rocky Butte Farmers Market

NE Siskiyou St and NE 80th Ave, Portland

Saturdays 9 AM to 1 PM

Rocky Butte has a rotating vendor list every week. On their Instagram they mentioned Twin Plums Farm just started this month… they grow mixed vegetables and herbs using regenerative practices. Riot Bloom Coffee is back this week too. I usually grab whatever vegetables look good and coffee if I’m running low.

I keep going because the vendor lineup changes so I find new farms and products I wouldn’t discover otherwise. It’s also smaller than Hollywood so I’m in and out faster.

The Portland Summer Routine I’d Recommend

If you haven’t built these into your summer yet, start with Hollywood Farmers Market, or do a quick produce run to Alberta Cooperative Grocery. You’ll probably end up planning a Saturday or two around them like I do.

These are the kinds of places I send clients to all the time. Not as a sales thing, just because they’re genuinely some of the best parts of living here.
